Throughout history, the market has remained a vibrant and lively shopping destination
1897 - El Mercado (The Market) is an architectural work by the renowned architect Juan Antonio Buschiazzo (1845-1917), commissioned by the businessman and philanthropist Antonio Devoto (1833-1916). It was created with the aim of supplying the necessary provisions to the new wave of European immigrants arriving in the city. Originally, fruits, vegetables, and meats were sold, and live chickens were displayed because there were no refrigerators.
20th Century - The Market evolves with the city, reflecting changes in consumer preferences and trends. Despite the changes, it manages to maintain its charm and historical character, serving as an important cultural landmark in the city.
2000 - Declared a National Historic Monument.
2028 - Completion of comprehensive restorations that enhance walkability and improve the environment, as well as promote gastronomic expansion and tourist, cultural, and commercial renewal.
Today - The San Telmo Market is a vibrant and lively shopping destination where you can find a fresh atmosphere in summer and a wide range of sustainable products, all just 15 minutes away from your home.
